Breast augmentation with fat transfer (lipofilling)

Breast augmentation with fat transfer, or lipofilling, is a natural alternative to implants. The procedure uses the patient’s own fatty tissue to increase breast volume and achieve a soft, natural-looking result. Fat transfer can also be used after implant removal or to complement and soften the result of existing implants.

  • Duration of the procedure: 1.5–2 hours
  • Anaesthesia: local or general anaesthesia
  • Discharge: the same day
  • Return to work: after 5–7 days
  • Price: from €4,500

Breast augmentation with fat transfer (lipofilling)

Purpose of the procedure

Transferring the patient’s own fat to the breasts is a gentle, natural way to restore breast volume and shape while maintaining balanced body proportions. As the procedure uses the patient’s own fatty tissue, the result feels soft, looks natural and consists entirely of their own tissue. It is suitable for patients who wish to avoid implants, achieve a moderate increase in volume or restore the breasts after pregnancy, weight loss or implant removal. Fat transfer can also be used to correct asymmetry or complement existing implants. Because only the patient’s own tissue is used, there is no risk of an allergic reaction or foreign-body reaction. This makes the procedure a safe, well-tolerated alternative to implants.

Course of the procedure

The procedure is performed in two stages:

  1. First, fat is removed by liposuction from areas where it is more abundant, usually the abdomen, thighs or flanks.
  2. The collected fat is then processed and injected into the breasts through small incisions.

The operation lasts approximately 1.5–2 hours and is performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure and the patient’s preference. The incisions are small, and the resulting scars are barely noticeable. The procedure is performed at the Plastic Surgery Centre at Kotka Private Clinic, and patients can go home the same day. Some of the transferred fat is absorbed naturally. The final result develops over approximately three months. Typically, 60–80% of the transferred fat remains, producing a natural-looking, long-lasting result.

Consultation and preparation

During the consultation, we will assess the condition of the breasts and the potential donor areas, as well as the amount of fat that can be transferred safely and realistically. Suitability depends on whether the patient has sufficient fatty tissue and how much volume they would like to add.  How to prepare for your consultation

Anaesthesia

The procedure is performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the amount of fat being transferred. Local anaesthesia is suitable for smaller corrections, while general anaesthesia is used for larger-volume procedures.

Recovery and aftercare

Swelling may occur in both the breasts and the donor areas during the first few days. Where necessary, a light compression garment or support bra may be worn for two to three weeks. Depending on the nature of your work, you can return to work after five to seven days. Strenuous physical activity should be avoided for three to four weeks to allow the transferred fat to settle. The shape of the breasts may change during the first few weeks. This is normal, as some of the transferred fat is naturally absorbed. The final result becomes visible after approximately three months.

Possible side effects and risks

Fat transfer to the breasts is a safe procedure, although some of the transferred fat may occasionally be absorbed or minor irregularities may develop. Mild swelling, bruising or changes in sensation may also occur in the donor area. All risks and the measures used to reduce them will be discussed during the consultation. You will also receive instructions to support recovery.

Good to know!

Fat transfer does not replace implants where a substantial increase in volume is desired. The result is moderate and natural-looking, increasing the breasts by approximately half to one cup size. The procedure can be repeated where necessary to achieve the desired result gradually. As fat is removed from the donor areas, the procedure also has a body-contouring effect. The transferred fat behaves like the body’s other fatty tissue and responds naturally to changes in weight and ageing.
