Facelift

Purpose of the procedure

A facelift is an aesthetic procedure that restores a fresher, more youthful appearance while preserving the natural character of the face. Over time, the skin loses elasticity, the contours of the cheeks and jawline change and wrinkles and sagging develop. A facelift tightens the skin and deeper tissues, restoring the natural contours and balance of the face and neck. The aim is not to change the patient’s appearance, but to help them look fresher and more rested.

Course of the procedure

A facelift corrects sagging tissues in the middle and lower face, including the cheeks, jawline and neck. We use the modern superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) technique, which tightens not only the skin but also the underlying layer of muscle and connective tissue. This produces a natural-looking, long-lasting result. The operation usually involves the following stages:

  • The incisions are made along the hairline and around the ears so that the scars remain concealed
  • The deeper tissues are tightened and secured in a new position
  • Excess skin is removed and the incisions are closed with fine stitches

Where necessary, a facelift can be combined with a neck lift, eyelid surgery or fat transfer to achieve a balanced result across the face and neck. The procedure lasts 2.5–4 hours and is usually performed under general anaesthesia. In some cases, local anaesthesia with sedation may be used. The patient usually remains in hospital overnight for observation.

Consultation and preparation

During the consultation, we will assess skin elasticity, facial muscle tone, fat distribution and the overall proportions of the face. The most suitable approach for achieving a natural-looking, balanced result will be explained, together with the plan for post-operative care. Depending on the desired result, either a full facelift or a mini facelift may be recommended.  How to prepare for your consultation

Anaesthesia

The operation is performed under general anaesthesia or, where appropriate, under local anaesthesia with sedation. You will not feel any pain during the procedure, which is carried out under the supervision of an anaesthetist. The patient remains in hospital overnight to support a safe and comfortable initial recovery.

Recovery and aftercare

  • Swelling, tenderness and tightness may occur during the first few days and generally subside within one to two weeks.
  • A compression bandage helps reduce swelling and supports the skin as it settles into its new position.
  • The stitches are removed after seven to ten days.
  • You can return to light work after approximately 10–14 days, although strenuous physical activity should be avoided for up to one month.
  • The final result becomes visible within two to three months, once the tissues have healed and regained their tone.

You will receive detailed aftercare instructions to support healing and minimise the visibility of scars.

Possible side effects and risks

A facelift is a safe procedure, but as with any surgery, side effects may occur. These include:

  • Swelling and bruising during the first few days
  • Changes in skin sensation
  • In rare cases, thickened scarring or asymmetry
  • Very rarely, temporary numbness or altered sensation caused by nerve irritation

All risks and recovery instructions will be explained during the consultation so that the patient feels safe and well informed throughout the process.

Good to know!

A modern facelift does not produce a tight or artificial appearance. By tightening the deeper tissues and carefully adjusting the skin, the procedure achieves a soft, natural-looking and long-lasting result. A facelift may be suitable if:

  • The jawline has lost definition
  • The cheeks have begun to sag
  • There is loose skin or horizontal creasing on the neck
