Arm lift (brachioplasty)

Purpose of the procedure

An arm lift removes excess skin and fatty tissue from the upper and inner arms, restoring a smoother, firmer appearance. The procedure is suitable for people who have developed loose skin following weight loss or as a result of ageing and where exercise or diet can no longer correct the concern. The aim is to achieve naturally toned, balanced contours that complement the rest of the body. “Brachioplasty does not fundamentally change a person’s body type but helps restore natural proportions and a lighter appearance.” – Dr Simmo

Course of the procedure

During the operation, an incision is made along the inner upper arm, through which excess skin and, where necessary, fatty tissue are removed. The incision generally extends from the armpit to the elbow. It is positioned on the inner arm and becomes barely noticeable as it heals. Liposuction is often performed before or during the procedure to even out the result and create a smoother, more natural contour. The operation takes approximately 1.5–2 hours and is performed under general anaesthesia.

Consultation and preparation

During the consultation, we assess skin elasticity, the distribution of adipose tissue and the condition of the tissues. Your expectations, the possible incision options and the length of the recovery period will be discussed. Where skin laxity is mild, liposuction alone can be sufficient. Where the skin is stretched, an arm lift produces the best result.  How to prepare for your consultation

Anaesthesia

Arm lift surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. You can go home on the same day or the following morning, depending on the extent of the surgery and how you feel.

Recovery and aftercare

Compression sleeves are worn after surgery to reduce swelling and support tissue healing. Swelling and bruising subside within two to three weeks. The stitches are removed after 10–14 days. You can return to work within one to two weeks and resume exercise after approximately four to six weeks. The scars are positioned on the concealed inner side of the arms and fade over time.

Possible side effects and risks

Temporary swelling and bruising are common. In rare cases, wound discharge, changes in skin sensation or uneven scarring can occur.. Smoking and strenuous physical activity should be avoided during healing so that the scars remain as fine and inconspicuous as possible.

Good to know!

  • An arm lift can be combined with other body-contouring procedures, such as abdominoplasty or a thigh lift.
  • The best result is achieved when body weight is stable and the muscles are toned.
  • Regular use of a compression garment supports healing and reduces the risk of excessive scar formation
