Breast asymmetry correction

Purpose of the procedure

Small differences in breast size or shape are completely natural. Where the asymmetry is more noticeable or causes discomfort, it can be corrected in a subtle, natural-looking way. The aim is to restore the natural balance and proportions of the breasts rather than achieve artificial symmetry. Each procedure is planned individually so that the result follows the contours of the body and looks natural.

Course of the procedure

Different surgical techniques may be used to correct breast asymmetry. Depending on the patient’s needs, these may include lifting or reducing one breast, augmenting one breast with an implant or adjusting the position of the nipple. A combination of techniques is often used to correct congenital asymmetry or tubular breasts. The operation usually lasts two to four hours and is performed under general anaesthesia. The procedure is performed at the Plastic Surgery Centre at Kotka Private Clinic, where the patient remains overnight for observation.

Consultation and preparation

Breast asymmetry is different for every patient, so a thorough consultation is essential. During the consultation, the doctor will assess the shape of the breasts, the structure of the tissues, the position of the nipples and the elasticity of the skin. An initial assessment can also be provided through an online consultation based on photographs. Dr Simmo will explain which surgical approach is most suitable and what results can realistically be expected. Where the asymmetry is more complex, treatment may be carried out in stages.  How to prepare for your consultation

Anaesthesia

The operation is performed under general anaesthesia, so you will not feel any pain during the procedure. After surgery, the patient usually remains in hospital overnight for recovery and observation.

Recovery and aftercare

You can return to work after seven to ten days, depending on the extent of the surgery and how you feel. Strenuous physical activity and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least three to four weeks. Swelling or a feeling of tightness may occur during the first few days and will gradually subside. The operation does not usually affect breastfeeding, as it involves the skin and surrounding tissues rather than the milk ducts. Should you have any questions or concerns, take a photograph and send it to the clinic. The doctor can assess the situation and provide advice remotely.

Possible side effects and risks

As with any surgery, rare complications may include bruising, infection, scarring or some remaining asymmetry. All risks and the measures used to reduce them will be discussed during the consultation. Modern surgical techniques help minimise the risk of complications.

Good to know!

Perfect symmetry does not occur naturally. The aim is not to create an idealised body but to restore a natural balance that the patient finds aesthetically pleasing. In some cases, asymmetry correction is combined with breast augmentation, a breast lift or fat transfer to achieve the best and most lasting result. Changes in weight and hormonal factors may affect the result over time, but it generally lasts for many years.
