Breast lift (mastopexy)

Purpose of the procedure

A breast lift, or mastopexy, helps restore the natural shape and firmness of breasts that have changed as a result of ageing, pregnancy or changes in weight. The procedure does not change who you are; it helps restore confidence and a natural sense of balance. The aim is to remove excess skin, raise the nipple to a natural position and reshape the breast so that it is in proportion with the rest of the body. A breast lift does not increase breast size. It restores the natural position and shape of the breasts. Where additional volume is desired, the procedure can be combined with breast implants or fat transfer.

Course of the procedure

During the operation, excess skin is removed and the breast tissue is reshaped to restore shape and symmetry. The nipple is raised while preserving its natural position and proportions. The operation lasts approximately two hours and is performed under general anaesthesia. The procedure is performed at the Plastic Surgery Centre at Kotka Private Clinic, where the patient remains overnight for observation. A special support bra should be worn for at least four weeks after surgery to support healing and help the breasts retain their new shape.

Consultation and preparation

During the consultation, Dr Simmo will assess the shape of the breasts, skin elasticity and the patient’s expectations. The most suitable surgical method will be determined, including whether a lift alone can achieve the desired result. Consultations are available in person or remotely by email using photographs.  How to prepare for your consultation

Anaesthesia

The operation is performed under general anaesthesia. The patient remains at the clinic overnight for observation to ensure a safe recovery.

Recovery and aftercare

During the first few days, the breasts may feel slightly tight or heavy. This is normal and subsides within a few days. You can usually return to work within one or two weeks, depending on the nature of your work and how your recovery progresses. Strenuous physical activity and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least four weeks. Wearing a support bra during recovery helps maintain the new shape and reduce swelling. The scars are positioned around the areola and, where necessary, extend towards the breast crease. They gradually become paler and less noticeable over time.

Possible side effects and risks

As with any surgery, occasional complications may include scarring, slight asymmetry, changes in sensation, bleeding or delayed wound healing. The shape of the breasts may naturally change over time as a result of changes in skin elasticity and weight. All risks and the measures used to reduce them will be discussed during the consultation to ensure that expectations are realistic and the procedure is safe.

Good to know!

The results last for many years, although natural changes in skin elasticity and the effects of gravity will continue to affect the breasts over time. Maintaining a stable weight and wearing a well-fitting bra can help preserve the result.
