Breast reconstruction after cancer surgery is not merely an aesthetic procedure – it is part of healing and restoring a woman’s sense of wholeness. After demanding cancer treatment, reconstructive surgery can help restore physical balance, confidence and quality of life. The aim is to achieve a natural-looking result that is in proportion with the rest of the body, preserving the patient’s own tissues where possible and restoring breast shape and symmetry.

Course of the procedure

Several methods are available for breast reconstruction. The choice depends on the previous surgery, the patient’s anatomy and their wishes. Main methods:

  • Reconstruction using the patient’s own tissue – skin and muscle tissue from the back or abdomen is used. This can produce a very natural result and does not require an implant.
  • Implant-based reconstruction – silicone implants are used. In some cases, a tissue expander is inserted first to prepare the area for the implant.
  • Combined reconstruction – the patient’s own tissue is used in combination with an implant when additional volume or improved symmetry is required.

Timing of reconstruction:

  • Immediate reconstruction – performed during the same operation as the cancer surgery. It can provide a better aesthetic result and reduce the need for further surgery.
  • Delayed reconstruction – performed after cancer treatment has been completed and the body has recovered.

Consultation and preparation

During the consultation, the patient’s situation is assessed as a whole, taking into account the previous treatment, skin elasticity, body shape and individual expectations. The safest and most suitable reconstruction method will be explained, and the operation will be planned in collaboration with the oncologist and the patient’s medical team. The consultation also addresses the emotional aspects of reconstruction and how it may help a woman regain a sense of wholeness and peace of mind. See how to prepare for a consultation →

Anaesthesia

The operation is performed under general anaesthesia, so you will not feel any pain during the procedure. The duration of the operation depends on the chosen technique and is usually three to six hours. After surgery, the patient remains in hospital for observation for up to two nights.

Recovery and aftercare

The recovery period depends on the reconstruction method and the extent of the surgery.

  • Initial recovery takes two to four weeks, while complete tissue healing may take up to three months.
  • Strenuous physical activity and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least six weeks.
  • A special post-operative bra is recommended to support the tissues as they heal.
  • Depending on the technique used, the stitches are either removed after four to nine days or dissolve on their own.
  • Scars gradually become paler and softer over time.

The medical team will monitor healing throughout the recovery period and provide guidance on scar care, physiotherapy and follow-up appointments.

Possible side effects and risks

As with any major surgery, rare complications may occur, including:

  • Swelling or fluid accumulation (seroma)
  • Scarring or changes in sensation
  • Bleeding or infection
  • Capsular contracture around the implant

All risks and stages of recovery will be explained thoroughly during the consultation so that the patient feels safe and well informed throughout the process.

Good to know!

Breast reconstruction is part of healing, not merely a change in appearance. Modern methods can achieve a soft, natural-looking result that is in proportion with the rest of the body, even after extensive breast cancer treatment. Where there is a genetically increased risk of breast cancer – for example, because of a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation – preventive or risk-reducing mastectomy may be combined with immediate breast reconstruction. This can offer the best aesthetic and psychological outcomes. We treat each patient individually. In addition to restoring the shape of the breast, our aim is to help restore a woman’s sense of self and confidence in her body.
