Small changes in breast tissue, such as lumps, cysts and fibroadenomas, are very common and are usually benign. However, they can cause discomfort, anxiety or uncertainty, particularly when a new lump is discovered. We will assess whether it should be removed or whether monitoring alone is sufficient. Where removal is required, the aim is to preserve the natural shape and appearance of the breast while providing reassurance and peace of mind.

Course of the procedure

The surgical removal of a benign breast lump is also known as excision of a breast lump or fibroadenoma excision. This is a minor, precise procedure in which the lump is removed, sometimes together with a small amount of surrounding tissue.

• The procedure usually takes 30–60 minutes.
• It is performed under local anaesthesia or, where necessary, general anaesthesia, so you will not feel any pain during the operation.
• The incision is usually positioned in the breast crease or around the areola to make the resulting scar as inconspicuous as possible.
• The removed tissue is sent for histological examination to confirm the diagnosis.

The patient can go home on the same day.

Consultation and preparation

During the consultation, you will have time to discuss all your questions calmly and thoroughly. The doctor will assess the breast tissue and review the results of any previous examinations. Where necessary, you will be referred for further tests. In some cases, monitoring is sufficient. In others, removing the lump may be advisable to relieve symptoms, clarify the diagnosis or prevent future problems. Anaesthesia

Minor procedures are performed under local anaesthesia. The procedure is painless and the patient remains awake. For larger or combined procedures, general anaesthesia is used. Most patients can go home the same day.

Recovery and aftercare

Recovery is quick and straightforward. Most patients feel well the following day and can resume normal activities within a few days.

• You can return to work within one to three days.
• Mild swelling or tenderness is normal and usually subsides within a few days.
• Depending on the type of stitches used, they are either removed after four to six days or dissolve on their own.
• Strenuous physical activity should be avoided for about one week.

The scar will gradually fade and become barely noticeable.

Removing a benign breast lump is a very safe procedure. Rare complications may include:

• Minor bruising or swelling
• Delayed wound healing
• Changes in sensation
• Slight changes in breast shape
