A breast cancer diagnosis can be frightening, but modern treatment is very effective and, in most cases, allows some or all of the breast tissue to be preserved. Breast cancer surgery is one of the most important stages of treatment. Its aim is to remove the tumour with an adequate margin of healthy tissue to reduce the risk of recurrence. Course of the procedure

The precise extent and type of surgery depend on the size and location of the tumour and the results of the examinations. There are two main types of surgery:

• Breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) – only the tumour and a small amount of surrounding tissue are removed.
• Complete removal of the breast (mastectomy) – performed when the tumour is larger or is present in several areas of the breast.

Where necessary, lymph nodes in the armpit are also examined or removed to assess whether the cancer has spread. The operation usually lasts one to three hours, depending on its extent. All removed tissue is sent for histological examination to confirm that the tumour has been completely removed and to help determine any further treatment.

Consultation and preparation

Consultation is the first and most important step. During the appointment, the examination results, such as the mammogram and biopsy findings, will be explained. The available surgical options will also be discussed, helping the patient choose the safest and most aesthetically appropriate solution. Anaesthesia

Breast cancer surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. You will be asleep and will not feel any pain during the operation. After surgery, the patient usually remains in hospital for one or two nights so that their condition and wound healing can be monitored.

Recovery and aftercare

Recovery depends on the extent of the surgery and whether any lymph nodes were removed. During the first few days, pain or swelling may occur in the breast area and can be managed with medication.

• The wound should be cared for in accordance with the doctor’s instructions.
• You can usually return to work within two to three weeks, depending on the nature of your work.
• Strenuous physical activity and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least four weeks.
• After breast-conserving surgery, the shape of the breast will gradually settle.
• After a mastectomy, the breast can be reconstructed later using the patient’s own tissue or an implant.

Depending on the technique used, the stitches are usually removed after four to six days or dissolve on their own.

Possible side effects and risks

As with any surgical procedure, side effects may occur after breast cancer surgery, including:

• Bruising or swelling
• Changes in sensation in the breast or armpit
• Delayed wound healing
• In rare cases, infection or fluid accumulation (seroma)
