Breast reduction

Purpose of the procedure

Excessively large breasts can cause both physical discomfort and emotional distress. Common reasons for considering breast reduction include back and neck pain, poor posture, difficulty exercising and a limited choice of suitable clothing. The aim of breast reduction is to remove excess fat, breast tissue and skin and create breasts that are naturally shaped and in proportion with the rest of the body. Posture often improves after surgery, and persistent tension in the shoulders and back may be relieved.

Course of the procedure

The operation usually lasts two to three hours and is performed under general anaesthesia. During the operation, excess breast tissue and skin are removed and the breasts are reshaped and repositioned. Where necessary, the nipples are also repositioned to achieve a symmetrical, natural-looking result. After surgery, the patient remains at the clinic overnight for observation. A special support bra should be worn for at least four weeks during recovery to support tissue healing and help the breasts retain their new shape.

Consultation and preparation

During the consultation, we will assess the size of the breasts, skin elasticity and the patient’s expectations. The most suitable surgical method and degree of reduction will be determined to achieve a natural-looking result that is in proportion with the patient’s body. In addition to reducing breast size, the procedure may reshape and reposition the breasts. Where necessary, it can be combined with a breast lift or asymmetry correction.  How to prepare for your consultation

Anaesthesia

The operation is performed under general anaesthesia. The patient remains at the clinic overnight for observation.

Recovery and aftercare

You can return to work after one or two weeks, depending on the nature of your work and how your recovery progresses. Strenuous physical activity, heavy lifting and sport should be avoided for four to six weeks. The breasts settle into their final shape, and the scars mature over three to six months.

Possible side effects and risks

Mild swelling, bruising, scarring or changes in sensation may occur. Delayed wound healing or reduced blood supply to the nipple may occur in rare cases. All risks and aftercare instructions will be discussed thoroughly during the consultation to support a safe, smooth recovery.

Good to know!

Sensation in the breasts may change temporarily after breast reduction. Some scars may remain visible, although they gradually become paler and finer over time. The shape of the breasts may also change during recovery. Wearing the recommended support bra and following the doctor’s instructions will help the breasts heal in the correct position.
