Liposuction is performed through small, concealed incisions, generally in the lower buttock crease or hip area. A fine cannula is used to remove excess fat by suction, creating a smooth, even contour. The procedure takes up to 90 minutes and is performed under local anaesthesia. General anaesthesia is used for more extensive corrections. Where appropriate, the removed fat can be used to restore volume elsewhere in the body, such as the upper buttocks or hip area.
During the consultation, Dr Simmo will assess the distribution of fatty tissue, skin elasticity and body proportions. Together, you will discuss whether the aim is solely to reduce volume or also to refine the contours. Where the skin is elastic, liposuction is sufficient. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. General anaesthesia is used for more extensive liposuction or combined procedures. The patient can go home on the same day.
A compression garment is worn after the procedure to support healing and reduce swelling. Swelling and bruising usually subside within two weeks. You can return to work after three to five days and resume physical activity after three to four weeks. The final result develops within eight weeks, once the swelling has fully subsided and tissue firmness has returned.
Temporary swelling, tenderness and bruising are common. In rare cases, skin unevenness or changes in sensation can occur. These resolve on their own. It is important to wear the compression garment and avoid prolonged sitting during the first few days to support even healing.
