Lower blepharoplasty

Purpose of the procedure

Loose or puffy lower eyelids can make the face appear tired and older. Under-eye bags, shadows and wrinkles can be corrected with lower eyelid surgery. The aim is to remove excess skin and fatty tissue where necessary, restoring a smoother, more youthful eye area. The result is a fresher, more rested appearance that improves the overall facial expression.

Course of the procedure

  • Where under-eye bags are the main concern, excess fatty tissue can be removed through an incision inside the lower eyelid, leaving no visible scar.
  • Where there is also excess skin or wrinkling, the incision is made just below the lash line, where the resulting scar becomes barely noticeable.

The procedure takes 45–90 minutes and is performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on its extent and the patient’s preference. The patient can go home on the same day after a few hours of observation. The dressings remain in place for approximately one week, and the stitches are removed after five to seven days.

Consultation and preparation

Consultations are available in person or remotely by email using photographs. The doctor will assess the under-eye area, skin elasticity and the distribution of fatty tissue. Where necessary, he will also assess the upper eyelids and eyebrows to ensure a balanced result.  How to prepare for your consultation

Anaesthesia

The operation is performed under local or general anaesthesia.

Recovery and aftercare

Swelling and bruising can occur during the first few days and subside within seven to ten days. The dressings remain in place for approximately one week, and the stitches are removed no later than the seventh day. The patient can return to work within seven to ten days, depending on the speed of recovery. Exercise and strenuous physical activity should be avoided for three to four weeks. The skin around the eyes should be kept clean. Make-up and intense sunlight should be avoided for two weeks. Swelling and dryness are temporary and do not require special treatment in most cases. Should you have any concerns, take a photograph and send it to the clinic. The doctor will assess it and advise you on what to do next.

Possible side effects and risks

In rare cases, complications include:

  • Temporary dryness or stinging in the eyes
  • Slight asymmetry
  • In very rare cases, scarring or outward turning of the lower eyelid (ectropion)
  • A hollow appearance beneath the eyes if too much fat is removed

All risks and the measures used to reduce them will be explained in detail during the consultation.

Good to know!

Lower eyelid surgery is one of the most common facial rejuvenation procedures. The final result develops over two to three months, although the improvement is visible within the first few weeks. The procedure can be combined with upper eyelid surgery or filler treatment to achieve a more even, refreshed result. In some cases, loose upper eyelid skin or drooping eyebrows can remain noticeable after lower eyelid surgery. These concerns can be addressed with a combined procedure.
