Male breast reduction

Purpose of the procedure

Gynaecomastia, or enlarged male breasts, is more common than many people realise. It is not always caused by excess weight. Overdevelopment of breast tissue can cause physical discomfort, embarrassment or a lack of confidence, even when a person is otherwise healthy. The aim of gynaecomastia surgery is to remove excess breast tissue and, where necessary, fatty tissue, restoring a natural, masculine chest contour. The result is a more balanced, aesthetically proportionate chest that can improve both physical comfort and confidence.

Course of the procedure

The operation usually lasts 60–90 minutes and is performed under general anaesthesia. The position of the incision depends on the extent of the condition. It is most commonly made around the edge of the areola, where the resulting scar is barely noticeable. Where more extensive correction is required, the incision may be extended to the sides or the position of the nipple may be adjusted. Liposuction may also be used where necessary to create a smooth, natural transition between the chest, sternum and flanks.

Consultation and preparation

Consultations are available in person or remotely by email using photographs. Dr Simmo will assess the shape of the chest, skin elasticity and tissue thickness and discuss which method is best suited to the patient’s circumstances. Gynaecomastia may be caused by hormonal changes, medication or genetic predisposition. During the consultation, the doctor will explain whether surgery is a suitable option and what results can realistically be expected.  How to prepare for your consultation

Anaesthesia

The operation is performed under general anaesthesia. The patient usually remains in hospital overnight for observation to support a safe initial recovery.

Recovery and aftercare

Swelling and mild tenderness may occur after surgery and subside within a few days. You can normally return to work after three to five days, depending on the nature of your work. Strenuous physical activity and heavy lifting should be avoided for four to six weeks. The final result becomes visible within two to three months, once the tissues have fully healed. Depending on the type of stitches used, they are either removed after four to six days or dissolve on their own. A compression vest or bandage should be worn for two to four weeks to support healing and reduce swelling.

Possible side effects and risks

As with any surgery, side effects may occur, including:

  • Bruising or swelling
  • Slight asymmetry
  • Changes in sensation
  • Scarring or slower healing of wounds

All risks and the measures used to reduce them will be discussed in detail during the consultation.

Good to know!

Gynaecomastia surgery does not affect muscle function or chest training. Where gynaecomastia is caused by a hormonal imbalance, it is also advisable to continue monitoring your general health and weight after surgery. The results are permanent provided that you maintain a stable weight and avoid medicines or substances that may cause the breast tissue to enlarge again.
