Mole removal

Purpose of the procedure

Moles and other skin lesions can cause aesthetic concern or require medical assessment. The aim of removal is to ensure both safety and a good aesthetic result by removing an unwanted or potentially harmful lesion and, where necessary, ruling out malignancy. Dr Simmo performs each procedure with precision and care, taking account of the skin’s appearance, function and safety.

Course of the procedure

Moles and skin lesions are removed as outpatient procedures at the clinic under local anaesthesia. An operating theatre is not required in most cases. The method is selected according to the lesion’s type and location:

• Surgical excision – the mole is removed with a small margin to ensure complete removal, and the tissue is sent for histological examination where necessary
• Superficial removal or dermabrasion – suitable for superficial, benign lesions such as seborrhoeic keratoses Recovery takes approximately one to two weeks.

The wound is closed with absorbable or removable stitches. Removable stitches are taken out after 5–14 days. Mild redness or itching can occur after the procedure, but there is no significant recovery period in most cases.

• A fine scar remains at the incision site and becomes barely noticeable over time.

Medically harmless lesions can also be removed for aesthetic reasons or if they cause mechanical irritation.

Consultation

The consultation can take place in person at the clinic or by email using photographs. Dr Simmo will assess the lesion and determine whether it should be removed, monitored or examined histologically. Anaesthesia

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and is completely painless. The effect of the anaesthetic wears off within a few hours.

Recovery and aftercare

The patient can go home on the same day. The wound must be protected and kept clean during the first few days. During recovery:

• Avoid sauna use, swimming and strenuous exercise for one to two weeks
• Use sun protection with SPF 30–50 for at least one month after the procedure
• Use scar care products recommended by the doctor where necessary

You can return to work the following day unless the location or extent of the procedure requires a longer recovery period.

Possible side effects and risks

Minor bruising, redness or wound irritation can occur. Most patients recover quickly and without complications. Where tissue is sent for analysis, the doctor will inform you of the results and explain any next steps.
