Purpose of the procedure

Skin lesion removal is a procedure in which benign or malignant lesions are removed for medical or aesthetic reasons. The aim is to establish an accurate diagnosis, prevent the spread of malignant disease and achieve the most natural-looking, aesthetic result possible. Course of the procedure

The most suitable removal method depends on the lesion’s size, location and type. Common methods include:

• Surgical excision – the lesion is removed with a small margin to ensure complete removal
• Biopsy – a tissue sample is taken to confirm or clarify the diagnosis
• Laser treatment or cryotherapy – suitable for small, benign lesions

The procedure usually takes 15–45 minutes and is performed under local anaesthesia. The wound is closed with fine stitches, which are removed after five to ten days, depending on the treatment area.

Consultation

During the consultation, Dr Simmo will assess the skin lesion and determine whether it should be removed immediately or examined further first. After removal, a tissue sample is sent for histological examination to confirm the diagnosis.  How to prepare for your consultation 

Anaesthesia

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so you will not feel any pain during treatment. The numbness wears off within a few hours, after which mild tenderness can occur.

Recovery and aftercare

Mild redness, swelling or tenderness can occur after the procedure and subsides within a few days. The wound heals within one to two weeks, depending on its location and the extent of the incision. The stitches are removed after five to ten days. Careful scar care and sun protection are important during recovery to achieve the best possible aesthetic result.

Possible side effects and risks

Common reactions include mild swelling, redness and scarring. In rare cases, infection or bleeding can occur, but these complications are treatable in most cases. The patient receives written instructions on wound care and follow-up.
