The neck is covered by a thin muscle called the platysma, which can loosen with age and form visible vertical bands. During surgery, incisions are made around the ears and along the hairline. Through these incisions, the skin is tightened and excess tissue is removed. Often a small incision is also made beneath the chin to access and tighten the underlying muscle. A neck lift performed without facial correction does not always produce the desired result, so it is often combined with a facelift.
During the consultation, the doctor will assess skin elasticity, muscle tone and the anatomy of the neck and face. Together, you will determine whether a neck lift alone is sufficient or whether it should be combined with a facelift. Photographs and measurements may be taken where necessary. A neck lift is usually performed under general anaesthesia. After a short period of observation, the patient can go home on the same day.
A supportive bandage should be worn for five to seven days after surgery. Moderate swelling and bruising may occur and will gradually subside. You can return to work and normal daily activities within ten to fourteen days, depending on your recovery. The scars are positioned along the hairline and around the natural folds of the ears, making them largely inconspicuous.
Rare complications may include bleeding, changes in skin sensation, asymmetry or visible scarring. Where the skin is very loose or tissue elasticity has significantly decreased, additional correction may be required.
