Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)

Purpose of the procedure

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is surgery to correct loose or sagging abdominal skin. It helps restore a firmer, flatter abdomen by removing excess skin and fatty tissue and tightening separated abdominal muscles. The procedure is suitable for people who have developed loose skin and muscle separation as a result of pregnancy, weight loss or ageing. A tummy tuck is not merely an aesthetic procedure – it can also improve physical comfort, posture, mobility and overall wellbeing. The result is a natural-looking, firmer and more proportionate abdominal contour.

Course of the procedure

During the operation, a horizontal incision is made in the bikini line. Excess skin and fat are removed through the incision and the abdominal muscles are tightened. Where necessary, the navel is repositioned to achieve a natural appearance. The procedure is often combined with liposuction to create a smoother waistline and a more balanced result. The operation lasts 1.5–3 hours and is performed under general anaesthesia. The patient remains in hospital overnight for observation.

Types of abdominoplasty

  • Mini-abdominoplasty – suitable when loose skin is limited to the area below the navel. The position of the navel is not changed.
  • Full abdominoplasty – excess tissue is removed from the entire abdomen and a new opening is created for the navel.
  • Extended abdominoplasty – in addition to the lower abdomen, the flanks or lower back are treated to remove a larger amount of excess skin.

Correction of diastasis (muscle tightening) – often performed as part of an abdominoplasty when the abdominal muscles have separated along the midline following pregnancy or changes in weight. It helps restore internal abdominal support and improve posture.

Consultation and preparation

During the consultation, the doctor will assess the condition of your skin and abdominal muscles, the distribution of fatty tissue and the extent of any diastasis. The most suitable type of surgery will then be determined, including whether liposuction or muscle tightening should also be performed. The location of the scars, the healing process and the expected recovery time will also be explained.  How to prepare for your consultation

Anaesthesia

The operation is performed under general anaesthesia, so you will not feel any pain during the procedure. You will stay at the clinic overnight to ensure that the initial stage of recovery is safe.

Recovery and aftercare

During the first few days, you will wear a compression belt or garment to support the tissues and reduce swelling. You can usually return to work after two to three weeks, while strenuous physical activity should be avoided for four to six weeks. The scar is positioned low along the bikini line and will gradually fade, becoming barely noticeable over time. The final result develops over two to three months, once the swelling has subsided and the tissues have healed.

Common side effects include temporary swelling, tenderness and numbness. Less common complications include wound discharge, thickened scarring and fluid accumulation (seroma). All risks and the measures used to reduce them will be discussed during the consultation.
